Goal
Develop and demonstrate in an operational environment a new sensor technology based on mathematical and probabilistic methodologies to identify the occurrence of carbonation at the earliest stages, long before the onset of corrosion.
Description
The process to achieve the goal will begin with the development of a surface-mounted multi-sensor unit for continuous recording of concrete parameters to accurately determine carbonation depth via artificial neural networks. Next, a probabilistic forecast algorithm will be developed to determine the evolution of carbonation progress based on accurate estimates of carbonate depth by the innovative sensor installed in the structure. These predictions of the progress of carbonation will be integrated into the general models of the structure (digital twin), to estimate its real influence on the useful life of the bridge.
